From thriller-filler-spiller planting to winter interest, master the art of containers so every pot on your terrace becomes a genuine focal point.
Scale is the most overlooked principle in container gardening. When in doubt, go bigger. A single 60cm pot with three specimen plants will always outperform six small pots scattered around a terrace. Larger containers also retain moisture better.
The thriller is your focal point: a tall, dramatic plant. Fillers are mounding plants that create fullness: petunias, calibrachoa, begonias. Spillers drape over the edge: bacopa, lobelia, sweet potato vine, or ivy.
Never use garden soil in containers as it compacts and drains poorly. Use a premium peat-free compost blended with 20% perlite. Incorporate a slow-release granular fertiliser at planting and supplement with a weekly high-potash liquid feed.
The most impactful containers use three colours maximum. Complementary combinations create maximum visual tension. Tonal combinations, all whites with silver foliage for example, have a quiet sophistication that rewards longer looking.
Do not abandon containers in autumn. Ornamental kale, dwarf conifers, winter-flowering pansies, and trailing ivy create beautiful winter displays. Plant bulbs deep in autumn containers for a spectacular spring emergence.
💡 Pro Tip: Water containers until water runs freely from the drainage holes. Brief watering that only wets the top inch is the single biggest mistake container gardeners make, causing shallow roots and struggling plants.
